Stop For Maya

My two readers may have noticed that I have recently deleted my name, my children and husband's names, and our location from my blog. I did this because I am constantly in need of reminding myself to be more careful, more cautious. I have a tendency, as I hope most people do, to be trusting. To assume the world is a good and safe place and that the people in it want that too.

As we all know, this is not always the case.

This post will not be about blogging safely. Instead, it is about my need to continually remind myself to be more cautious. Especially when it comes to the safety of my children.

When we were in Chicago this summer, my Dad told me a horrible story about a colleague of his. This man's daughter got hit and killed by a hit and run driver who didn't stop for a stop sign. She died right in front of her mother and brother's eyes.

Her name was Maya. She was four years old. You can read about it here and here.

I pledge to myself, again, to be cautious with my children. To remember their fragility and to remember that my husband and I are their protectors.

Please remember to stop at all stop signs. Completely. Do it for your own children. Do it for all children.

Do it for Maya.

I don't use my kids' names on my blog either...or pictures with their faces. I know 99% of people are good people, but I've watched one too many "To Catch a Preditors" on dateline not to worry. Sad, really!
Anyway, I've checked your site out before via Crystal's & my Goosey has the same name as your "J". Kind of funny :)

You are so right. I use pseudonyms for my whole family. The world is a little scary...To Catch a Predator scares the h-e-double hockey stick out of me....those are just the pervs within DRIVING distance.

I just changed your name on my blog. I agree that this blog world makes me a little nervous, it is not the mommy bloggers I worry about but the scary people that might be reading a mommy blog for all the wrong reasons.
I do not reveal my location or last name. I am even considering adding a false location. Say this week I am from Boise, next week maybe Columbus or maybe Tallahassee.

What a sad story. Thanks for the reminder that life is fragile.

I have considered going back and using pseudonyms and the task is daunting. I don't use last names or locations, but I have nearly 200 posts to edit. Yikes. Maybe I should start on that - you just never know.

I just went back through my posts and tried to clean them up a little for a little more discretion. It was one thing when I was posting for just family and only my mom and mother in-law checked my blog. But now with my blogger friends I know I need to be a little more careful. Thanks for the reminder.

Terribly sad story. That poor little girl. Thank you for the reminder to REALLY stop at a SS (not the kindofalmostcompletestop I tend to do).

And, I've also made a new rule to use only side or back shots of my family. Not sure what I'll do with my archived posts that include photos though.
