Open Marriage

Does this even happen anymore? Does anyone believe in this crazy practice today?

I thought open marriages died out at the same time as wide collars, polyester pants and sideburns. But I guess not.

Earlier this week, I found out that my friend, the one who I suspected of having an affair, is still having her affair, albeit at a greater distance, since he moved to a city far from her. But she's been taking a lot of trips. Trips by herself. Trips that land her in the very near vicinity of the man she's been sleeping with. The man her husband apparently doesn't know she's sleeping with.

I also found out to my shock and dismay, that the married man she is sleeping with is practicing the deplorable ritual of open marriage.

That's right, folks. Open Marriage.

Or at least I found out that he and his wife used to practice this. Whether the wife knows about it at this time is unknown. But she's been comfortable with it in the past.

So when another friend and I questioned over and over, "How does [the wife] not know?" We were asking the wrong question. Oh, she knows alright. She's just okay with it.

Can you even imagine?

I can't imagine. Or understand. My husband is mine, and I'm not sharing!

Nope, I cannot imagine it. I wouldn't want to think of it. All I can think of are the worst possible parts of it.

I try not to judge as best as I can, but that is not a choice I'd be comfortable making - even less so if it was a choice my husband made.

Some people just don't think of sex as anything beyond the physical. If people want to have open marriages that's up to them, as long as they respect others' commitments to closed marriages.

A recently divorced friend of mine decided that monogamy was a ridiculous practice. After an incident she had with a married man, I had to have a long talk with her telling her that if she doesn't want to practice monogamy that's her prerogative, but she needs to respect the monogamous relationships of others. No home-wrecking aloud.

Yikes! I think of Open Marriage, and I think of lots of chest hair and big mustaches. Not the kind of guy I want to be around. And, does that mean he is "open" with other women too? I wonder how many other women he sleeps with? Ick!

That is unbelieveable, and totally disgusting. On everyone's part that is involved. All wives, and all husbands! YUCK!

I can't even begin to imagine. It's wrong on so many levels. To me it's disrespectful to the holy union of marriage. And I can't even imagine what it would do if there were kiddos involved.

UGH!

Blech. I hope your friend is at least being safe in her cheating. I can only imagine what she might be bring to her unsuspecting husband.

No. I really can't imagine. I had a friend who recently had a torrid love affair and it ended (3 years later) VERY NASTY. Not fun at all!

I say they can't really be completely happy to begin with...

It's sad. I hope there are no kids involved?
